BIO

Rebecca Fox lives and works in San Francisco, California and has been creating welded steel sculpture for over twenty years. Rebecca studied sculpture at San Francisco City College's Fort Mason Art Campus and was the Teacher's Assistant and Laboratory Technician for the Sculpture Department. To expand her technical knowledge, Rebecca worked for several years as a welder in a custom metal fabrication shop in Oakland, California.

Rebecca's work has been exhibited extensively throughout the Bay Area including the SFMOMA Artists Gallery, Google's San Francisco Headquarters, and was selected for ArtSpan's prestigious exhibition Selections 2010.

In 2009 she was selected to create a heart for the public art project Hearts in San Francisco and her heart was displayed for six months each in Union Square and Mission Creek Park. Her work has been featured on the national television shows Superscapes on HGTV and Sugar Dome on The Food Network as well as the Bay Area television show 7Live.

Rebecca's work has produced an extensive following of collectors, and her work is included in over 200 private collections throughout the United States as well as in Stanford Hospital & Clinics public art collection in Palo Alto, CA and in the Aurelian Marketing Group for the Life is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas, NV.

Rebecca maintains a studio at Islais Creek Studios in San Francisco.

STATEMENT

My work explores the contradiction of material and process by transforming steel to appear soft and delicate, resulting in work that evokes contemplation, balance and calm.

Metal is a contradiction in itself; it is a hard heavy material but with the perfect combination of heat, gases and tools, it can be manipulated, melted, formed and changed. I continuously push the boundaries of the material by transforming it to appear light and delicate. I achieve this by using my various metalworking tools to heat, bend, weld and alter the material, often composing pieces that have flowing lines combined with contrasting textural elements.

A large part of my work is about the process: hiding and grinding down welds to give the piece a look of continuous flow which encourages contemplation and further investigation into the material, process and form. By applying various patinas, chemicals and finishes, I further soften the material and give the work a cohesive look and feel.

There is a very common shape that can be seen in most of my work: the circle. By manipulating the circle in various configurations, I use minimal positive and negative space to play upon tension, balance and form. The circle also helps to achieve the contrast of material vs. form by invoking a sense of continuousness, calmness and tranquility.
